Implementation Concentration

This course continues the material from Python Programming beginning with lists and basic structures. Then, the focus moves toward Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) that includes topics such as objects, classes, encapsulation, abstraction modularity, memory management, inheritance, and polymorphism. Advanced Python language features like iterators, generators, lambdas, and comprehensions are also covered.

Students will learn the history and basics of computing as well as the fundamentals of Python programming. General topics include: the history of computing, number systems, Boolean logic, algorithm design and implementation, and modern computer organization. Programming topics include: memory and variables, data types, mathematical operations, basic file I/O, decision-making, repetitions, functions, and list basics.

This course will provide students a broad introduction to programming for iOS in the context of developing apps for Apple mobile platforms (e.g. iPhone, iPad). Students will gain experience developing native apps using Swift, Interface Builder, and the iOS SDK. Peripheral topics, including networking, security, and accessibility, are also covered.

This course will provide students a broad introduction to programming for the Android operating system in the context of developing smartphone and tablet apps. Students will gain experience developing native apps using Kotlin, Android Studio, and the Android SDK. Peripheral topics, including networking, security, and accessibility, are also covered.

A dive into human-computer interaction theory is mixed with hands-on experience implementing a UI-centric research project. Students learn the history of human-computer interaction, its key paradigms, and the research methods used to investigate new interfaces. Seminar-style discussion classes and presentations are coupled with practical experience implementing and running a scientific experiment.
