Library Borrowing Policies
Like all libraries, Champlain College Library strives to promote access to resources and materials while at the same time protecting them. Our policies reflect that need for balance between access and preservation.

Borrowing Materials
Champlain College students, faculty, and staff may borrow library materials by presenting their current Champlain College ID. Most students receive their ID during registration. Off-campus students can request an ID card from Compass Student Services in advance of their visit to the library. Alumni and auxiliary employees will be issued cards by a member of the library’s Access Services team upon presenting proof of graduation and/or current employment. Neighbors of the College seeking Guest Borrower privileges should contact circulation@champlain.edu.
All cards expire at the end of the semester in which they are issued, upon withdrawal from the College, or upon cessation of employment. Use of the Champlain-issued ID constitutes an agreement to abide by all applicable Library policies. Patrons are responsible for all items charged out on their card. Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately both to Student Services and to the Library. All patrons are advised for their own protection not to loan their cards to other persons or to give materials charged to their accounts to any other person.
Alumni, Neighbors, Guests, and Retirees may borrow print books from the library. Access to electronic resources, such as ebooks and online databases, and interlibrary loan are only provided for currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff.

Place a Hold
Most physical items found in the library catalog can be placed on hold at the library’s Circulation Desk.
Hold Request Instructions:
- Search for the item you would like to locate. If using ChampSearch, you will want to click ¡°Retrieve Catalog Item¡± from the results list for the item you want to request. This will take you to the Classic Library Catalog.
- Click on the ¡°Request¡± icon at the top of the screen in the classic catalog.
- Log in to place the hold using your staff or student ID card number and name.
- You will receive an automatic email verifying the hold.
- If the item is available you will be able to pick it up that week. If it is checked out to another patron you will be notified when the item is available.
- Wait for an email from library staff confirming your requested item is available for pickup.
- If you are unable to enter the library building (e.g. you are under a quarantine requirement due to illness), we can bring a requested item out to the library’s main entrance for you.

Overdue and Lost Items
Champlain College Library does not charge fines for overdue items or bill for lost items with the exception of “library use only” items and items checked out through interlibrary loan. In order to provide equitable access to library materials, we rely on everyone to return the items they borrow when finished with them.
Patrons are responsible for returning or renewing all items charged to their account on or before the date on which they are due. Any items not returned or renewed on time are considered lost. Multiple lost items on the same patron account may result in borrowing privileges being suspended.
If you believe that you have lost an item or you have questions about this policy, contact circulation@champlain.edu.
-
Renew Books
Champlain College students, faculty, and staff can renew books online:
- Go to the Renew Books page.
- Enter your name and ID barcode number. (This is the number on your ID card. If the number begins with “82-“, enter only the digits that appear after the dash; that is, the final seven digits.)
- A list of your currently checked out items will appear, and you can renew the books that are eligible for renewal by choosing specific titles and using the Renew Selected Items feature.
For more information about current loan policies, contact circulation@champlain.edu.
