Obtaining a Vermont State Driver’s License

Obtaining the Vermont State Learner’s Permit
- Read the Driver’s License Manual and study for the written exam.
- Make an appointment to take the Driver’s License Knowledge/Written Test by scheduling an appointment online (select “Exams (Road and Written Tests) and the South 足彩胜负14场 location which is the closest to campus).
- Bring the following documents to the South 足彩胜负14场 Department of Motor Vehicles site:
- Completed and signed License/Permit Application – English
- Passport
- F-1 Visa (Not required for students from Canada/Mexico/adjacent islands)/J-1 Visa
- Current Forms I-20 or DS-2019
- Current Form I-94 electronic printout
- Student ID
- Official Champlain transcripts
- US Social Security Card OR Letter from Social Security stating that you are ineligible for a card. If you do not have a U.S. Social Security Number, you must:
- Request a letter from the Director, OISS stating that you are not eligible for a Social Security Number
- Take the letter with supporting documentation to the closest Social Security Administration site (足彩胜负14场).
- The SSA will print a second letter saying that you are ineligible for a Social Security Number.
- Take this letter to the DMV with the other documents listed below.
- Any 2 documents that include your name and current Vermont residential address that demonstrate residency in the state of Vermont:
- piece of mail with current name and Vermont street address including city/town,
- utility bill (must list service address),
- property tax bill with physical location, lease or landlord statement, homeowners/renters insurance policy, or Vermont EBT or Vermont AIM identification card.
- Pay the required fees and pass the vision and written tests – The fees for the Vermont State Learner’s Permit is $63.00 USD (exam fee is $39 USD and the permit fee is $24 USD). You can pay using a US credit or debit card or a check payable to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

With your permit, you can drive with any licensed and unimpaired individual 25 years of age or older riding in the front seat.

Take the Road Test
- Review the Driver’s License Manual for the road test.
- Make an appointment to take the Driver’s License Road Test by scheduling an appointment online (select “Exams (Road and Written Tests) and the South 足彩胜负14场 location which is the closest to campus).
- Have someone over the age of 25 with a valid driver’s license come with you.
- Have a vehicle that meets all the stated requirements.
- Bring your auto insurance identification card and registration certificate – both are required to do the road test.
- Bring all your immigration and residency documents from the permit process with you, including another completed and signed License/Permit Application – English.
- Your license will be issued after you pass the road test and pay the fees.
- The Vermont State Operator’s License (Driver’s License) is $62 USD (4 year license) and $23 USD for the road test. You can pay by credit or debit card or also check payable to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
