The Champlain College Criminology & Criminal Justice program offers you the field¡¯s full range of possibilities, covering the core competencies needed in today¡¯s changing environment. Through collaborations with professionals in the field, internships, classroom teaching, and hands-on experience, you¡¯ll immerse yourself in criminal justice techniques and procedures. All of this experience allows you to build the confidence you need in the field, preparing you to make good decisions and benefit your community.
By the time you graduate, you will be able to:
- Identify, analyze, and evaluate the components of the criminal justice system including criminal laws, criminal procedure, police operations, and the policies and services involved in processing offenders from investigation and arrest through trial, sentencing, and post-conviction re-entry into society.
- Analyze and apply substantive criminal law and criminal procedure through a thorough understanding of the essential elements of more than 40 crimes, as well as the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
- Analyze the nature of crime and criminal behavior and their impact on policy related to crime and public safety.
- Develop skills through experiential learning that are necessary for careers in criminology, law enforcement, cybercrime, court systems, or corrections.
- Identify, analyze, and compare the philosophy, functions, and roles of institutional incarceration, diversion and treatment courts, and community-based corrections.
- Identify, analyze, and evaluate the role of ethics and political and corporate power on the criminal justice system and policy, as well as the theories and advocacy for criminal justice reform.
- Write documents and give oral presentations that inform and persuade specific intended audiences.
